Bill Sweeney, VDoF
Bill’s favorite riparian plant: skunk cabbage
How does your work support healthy streamside ecosystems in the James River watershed?
DOF partners with numerous federal, state, and local agencies, NGOs and volunteer organizations to retain and establish forested riparian buffers throughout the James River watershed.
What do you love most about your work?
The best part of my job is working with an outstanding team to find ways to better serve both our natural resources and the citizens of the Commonwealth.
What was your journey/career path that led you to the work you do now?
I always wanted to be a forester. The positions I’ve held with federal, state and private groups all played into my accepting this most recent position. I’ve worked in traditional forestry, forest health, and water quality fields, and they all seemed to have culminated in my current role in the agency.
What do you value most about the Consortium? How has it positively impacted your work?
Primarily, the consortium has been vital to meeting new partners and building acquaintances into friendships. It also provides a safe place to share knowledge and to learn.
