I

How does your work support healthy streamside ecosystems in the James River watershed?

I host volunteer events along the Appomattox River Trail. Every participant learns about invasive plants and how to identify our target invasive of the day. Participants also remove trash and tend to native plant gardens along the river & trail.

I

What do you love most about your work?

I love the moment when people start connecting the dots between their environment, the life it can support, and their personal impact on it. Those realizations were so powerful and meaningful to me that I changed my career to better share them with others.

I

What was your journey/career path that led you to the work you do now?

With an illustration degree (Communication Arts BFA), I set out to tell stories about humans and nature. After some desk-heavy positions, I had the opportunity to join AmeriCorps as a service member for the Richmond Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities as a volunteer event manager. Working directly with individuals outside was a rewarding and positive experience; now at FOLAR, I continue to host volunteer events and live talks and trainings regarding invasive and native plants, and our interactions with our environments.

I

What do you value most about the Consortium? How has it positively impacted your work?

Attending the Consortium in the past has been a great pleasure and learning experience. I’ve been able to build community and hear different perspectives from those involved with riparian care.
